How are Humans Impacting Grizzly Bears?

How our actions affect the bears:
  • Human developed sites disturb bear habitats through temporary or permanent displacement and habitat loss.
  • Human-Grizzly contact is increased with increased length of time of human presence in bear territory.
    • Examples include campgrounds, trails, lodges, summer homes, mining operations and etc.
  • Habituation occurs when bears encounter human populated sites without any negative consequences. Hence, Grizzly bears are not wary of humans and stay in the area.

With an increase in human-grizzly interactions, logically, there is an increase in human-caused bear mortalities. Using data compiled from an USFWS report, I created this figure illustrating the percentage at which humans were causing grizzly bear deaths.

The percentages shown are the percentage of total grizzly bear deaths caused by humans. Source of data: Table 2, USFWS, Grizzly Bear,  5 year review.

With the wildlife crossing sites and better grizzly bear education, these percentages can go down to zero. By limiting human-bear contact especially with motorized vehicles the probability of a human-caused bear mortality occurring will go down.

  2. What data did you collect? what is it about? Also, there are a few grammatical errors on your other pages. I like how you give the goals for conservation, but it was unclear to me how they will specifically conserve the grizzly bear?

  3. I really like the overall idea of your blog. However, similar to what Jamie said, I am curious to know exactly what data you collected? I think it would be could to have some sort of visual representation of numbers of grizzly bears found in one location over a period of time. Also, try to make sure formatting is the same on each page.
